Abstract

Against the backdrop of the growing dominance of materialistic paradigms in the modern era, which have contributed to the rise of atheistic discourse, this study aims to analyze the Qur’anic narrative in strengthening faith as a response to atheism, with particular focus on Ibnu Asyur’s al-Tarīr wa al-Tanwīr. While a number of studies have addressed the concept of faith in the Qur’an as well as critiques of atheism, there remains a lack of research that specifically elaborates Qur’anic narratives within the framework of classical exegesis and connects them to contemporary atheistic discourse. This research employs a qualitative library-based approach using a thematic (mawū‘ī) and descriptive-analytical method to examine Ibnu Asyur’s interpretation. The findings indicate that: first, atheism, from the Qur’anic perspective, is positioned as a worldview fundamentally opposed to faith; second, the characteristics of atheistic views addressed in the Qur’an include the denial of God’s existence, prophethood, religion, the concepts of reward and punishment, and the afterlife; and third, the Qur’anic narrative, as interpreted by Ibnu Asyur, constructs the reinforcement of faith through reminders of the primordial covenant between humans and God, the legitimacy of the divinely approved religion, the authority of prophethood, and the certainty of recompense and eschatological life. Accordingly, this study affirms that Ibnu Asyur’s exegesis presents a consistent Qur’anic narrative that strengthens faith as an antithesis to atheism.
